Boy Scouts Are Gay

As of today the Boy Scouts of America will start allowing openly gay boys into their organization.  A huge win for equal rights activists and an epic fail for the conservative right.  What does this mean for existing scouts and their families?

Much to my surprise, this news comes as almost a non-event for the local pack that my son is involved in.  Perhaps this little corner of America is finally catching up to the rest!  We have around 50 scouts in our pack and I can proudly say that I haven’t heard of one family leaving the organization yet.  What’s even better, is that the local church which carries our charter hasn’t broken ties with the scouts.  We are in the process of re-chartering and so far everything seems to be going smoothly.

Unfortunately, I have heard of a handful of families leaving other local packs.  This is truly sad for the boys.  For anyone not involved in scouting, it’s hard to understand the amount of time and hard work the boys put into earning their various badges and patches.  They learn numerous skills, build strong friendships and experience so much in the world.  If parents are going to remove their boys from BSA, then they should probably go ahead and remove little Johnny from all sports and start homeschooling while they’re at it.

I don’t understand this “stay away from the gays” mentality people have.  Don’t parents understand that they are doing their child a disservice by keeping them in the closet?  They are teaching their kids that it’s ok to avoid people who are different from themselves.

I for one, want to raise my children to be strong independent thinkers.  I want to raise them to feel comfortable around all types of people.  Most importantly, I want my children to appreciate and love all of humankind.

Good Reads

Call me old fashioned, but I prefer reading regular paper books rather than any type of eBook.  I know that sounds strange coming from someone in the under thirty crowd.  (I have less than a year to stake a claim in that title and I will do so down to the very last day!) There is just something about having that physical, tangible book with pages in my hand that I don’t get from an eBook.  One of my favorite pastimes is sitting on the couch, covered up with a good book to read.  That however, rarely happens in my house.  Really, who has time for that?  Like any mom, I stay pretty busy running my kids to school and to their various activities, maintaining a clean dwelling and making sure they get some kind of nourishment.  Oh and I always like to be sure they are alive and well at the end of the day.  Most of my reading time comes from the countless hours spent in the car pick up line at my son’s school.  Not the ideal setting, but hey, I will take what I can get.

Needless to say I prefer books that are quick and to the point, yet still very informative and thought-provoking.  Some sort of comedic relief goes a long way also.  No one wants to read a complete snoozefest!! Recently I finished reading Richard Dawkins’s The God Delusion.  Loved, loved, loved that book.  He explained and elaborated on several topics that I had already begun thinking about prior to picking up a copy.  Next on my list is DEconverted, by Seth Andrews.  He spent most of his life in church and was a Christian radio host at one point.  His book talks about his deconversion process and journey away from religion.  As a recovering Christian myself, I am very much looking forward to reading his story.

Any other recommended readings would be greatly appreciated!

Labels

So I finally have my blog up and going! (sorta)  What to do next?  BLOG!!  How do you identify yourself?  Atheist, Agnostic, humanist…the list goes on.  I didn’t really choose to identify as an atheist.  Down here if you say that word most people will automatically think in their mind that you are some satanic evil doer.  So yeah that wasn’t my first choice.  I am not one for labels but that is how most people identify one another.  Male, Female, Homosexual, Heterosexual, Baptist, Methodist, Agnostic, Atheist…all are words we use to help understand each other.  There are numerous ways I identify myself-agnostic atheist, humanist, free-thinker, skeptic…but for the sake of this post I will consider myself agnostic atheist. The more I read and learn the more I find myself identifying as such. I don’t believe in a personal god and can’t force myself into believing in some man-made myth.  My views may evolve during my journey in life but for now this is where I am.  This is where I feel happy.  Feel free leave comments.  I would love to know where others are in their walk in life!
